Peewee Rangers romp in Lake Placid

Not all gold medals won in Lake Placid are miracles.

The Oakville peewee AE Rangers steamrolled their way to the championship in a recent tournament they played at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, the same venue where the American men?s hockey team defeated the Soviet Union in the ?Miracle on Ice? en route to gold at the 1980 Olympics.

The only Canadian team in its division, Oakville outscored its opponents by a combined count of 40-3. The Rangers also took the opportunity to visit the bobsled, ski jump and speed skating ovals used for the 1980 Games.

?Our kids had a great time, played some great hockey and had an Olympic history lesson all in one long weekend,? said Rangers coach Nelson Pavao. ?It?s not that often this occurs in a weekend hockey tournament.?

Rangers captain Jack Modzelewski had 10 points in five games, Jacob Zedor posted tournament highs for most assists (three) and points (four) in one game, and goaltender Braeden Pauley won all three games he started.

In skills competitions, the Rangers? Jack Baldin, Matthew Damery, Jared Schutz and Adam Lefebvre were runners-up in team relay, while Christian Tremblay finished second in the shootout competition. Modzelewski also received a Can/Am Scholarship Award for an essay he completed at the event on leadership in competitive sports.

Other members of the team are Luke Dickson, Eric Hansen, Liam Keery, Kevin Power, Jake Dickson, Bradley Byers, Jack Copeland, Jay Stanbury and Malik Wocker. Brent Scarrow, Rob Stanbury, Steve Schutz and Joe Baldin are the club?s assistant coaches, and Linda Hansen is the team?s manager.
